Emmerdale’s Matthew Wolfenden said his goodbyes to the soap last year after nearly 20 years – now, it’s been reported that he’s bagged an appearance on a BBC show
Matthew Wolfenden has reportedly signed up for a new TV show since his surprise exit from ITV’s Emmerdale.
The actor played David Metcalfe on the long-running soap – making his debut in 2006. But last year, it was confirmed that he had quit the Dales after 17 years.
Addressing his exit earlier this month on This Morning, Matthew told viewers: “It feels like the right time. The door’s left open.
Since saying his goodbyes, Matthew has ventured out into the world of podcasting, hosting a show, Celebrity Side Hustles with his former co-star Roxy Shahidi.
However, viewers are no doubt longing for him to return to telly screens. Well now, it’s been claimed that the star is set to star in the new season of BBC’s Celebrity Antiques Road Trip.
Speaking to The Sun, a source said: “Matthew has signed up for the show – he thinks it’ll be a laugh and fun to be on TV as himself, not his soap character.”
The show, which airs on BBC Two, sees famous faces attempt to make money off second-hand items. Previous celebs that have appeared on the show include Gemma Collins, and Love Island’s Davide and Ekin-Su.
In 2018, Matthew tied the knot with his co-star Charley Webb, who played Debbie Dingle, and the couple share three sons together. Matthew’s reason for leaving the soap was due to a lack of “gritty storylines,” with a source telling The Sun: “Matthew has had an amazing time on the soap, but feels ready for a change.
“He hasn’t been getting any gritty storylines recently so wants to see what else is out there. He’s a fan favourite so will get a lot of support in whatever he decides to do next.”
The insider added: “He’s very excited about the opportunities available. He’s only just announced he is leaving so scriptwriters are working out his on-screen exit.”
