Emmerdale star Daisy Campbell has addressed the mistakes her character Amelia Spencer has made amid her relationship with evil Tom King.
Tom recently started dating Amelia following the end of his marriage with estranged wife Belle Dingle, who has since publicly revealed that Tom was emotionally and physically abusive towards her.
In scenes that aired last week, Amelia worked together with Tom to trap Belle in Wishing Well cottage, allowing the abuser to taunt Belle and hunt her around the property with an axe.
Although Campbell acknowledges her character’s mistakes and understands why fans can’t understand her actions, she has also pointed out that Amelia is much younger than Tom and “vulnerable” to his manipulation.
“There’s a 10 year age gap between Amelia and Tom and she’s vulnerable. When I think of Amelia, she’s never happy, she’s always got sad storylines and she’s always very vulnerable,” she told The Mirror.
“I think he’s got her where he wants her – she’s not seeing it right now because he’s an older man.”
Campbell continued: “You know what it’s like when you’re younger and you’re dating someone who’s two years older than you and you’re like ‘Oh my god!’ She sees him as a man and someone who can protect her so she’s not really seeing that abusive side.
“I think he’s got to tread carefully because he doesn’t want to get Amelia to realise because Amelia’s the only one on his side right now.”
Although she says Amelia is “now under Tom’s wing”, Campbell hopes that she’ll eventually see the truth about Tom and team up with Belle to take him down once and for all.
“I’m reading the scripts and I’m like, ‘Come on, you’ve got to pull through for Belle’. So hopefully we’ll see some of that,” she said.
